03 Mar BFG & Wild Things trip to Roman Villa at The Newt
BFG and Wild Things Classes went on on an exciting trip to the Roman villa at The Newt in Bruton. As we arrived, we were greeted by beautiful gardens that looked just like the ones the Romans might have had. The villa itself was amazing, with its ancient walls and intricate mosaics still intact. We learned that the Romans used villas like these for both living and working, with special rooms for cooking, bathing, and relaxing. One of the highlights was visiting the bathhouse, where we could see how the Romans took their baths in a very different way from us today!
The children were given hands on experience piecing together Roman pots, using tesserae to create a mosaic, handling Roman artefacts and weaving Roman textiles. In the museum, the children used the exhibits to plan a dinner party using the exhibits of the market stall to cost the food using the Roman currency, denarius, designing invitations and laying a table choosing appropriate tableware for wealthy visitors.
