31 Mar Design and Technology – Making Roman Toy Horses
BFG and Wild Things have designed and created Roman toy horses, taking inspiration from the horses used during the Roman era. This project aimed to combine historical learning with practical design and construction skills, enabling the children to explore both Roman history and design techniques. Based on their sketches, children choose appropriate materials for their design. They used wood for the horse’s body, wooden dowels and wheels for the moving mechanism, wool for the tail, and acrylic paint pens to decorate. Using small Japanese saws, they carefully cut out the shape of the horse’s body, and head then sanded the edges for a smooth finish. Once painted the children made pompom tails and braided wool for pulling their horse toy along. Next week they will evaluate their horses based on criteria such as creativity, craftsmanship, and attention to historical accuracy.
