24 Mar Exploring Judaism: An afternoon of Discovery and Learning
Year 3 had the privilege of welcoming visitors who shared their knowledge and insights about Judaism. It was an engaging and enriching experience that broadened our understanding of Jewish traditions, history, and culture.
The children learned about the Festival of Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, which celebrates the miracle of the oil lasting eight days. Eleri and Caiden explained the significance of the Shofar horn, often sounded during Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, and how it marks the start of a new year in a spiritual sense. They also discovered the importance of special days like the Sabbath, a day of rest, and the significance of being responsible for our own religious education, which is marked by the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
Eleri and Caiden explained several artefacts and items from Jewish culture, which helped them understand the practices and traditions. They also learned about Kosher foods, the dietary laws that govern what can and cannot be eaten in Jewish households.
To top it off, the children had the chance to write their names in Hebrew, which was a fun and at times confusing activity. Eleri and Caiden encouraged the children to ask plenty of questions, and left them feeling energised and eager to continue learning more about Judaism and its many traditions. It was an inspiring experience that deepened our respect for the culture and teachings of Judaism, and we’re excited to explore more!
