03 May STEAM Bridge Building Competition
On Thursday 25th April the children of Paddington and Wild Things class rose to a STEAM building challenge – The same one entered by Brunel over 100 years ago!
The children worked in mixed age groups and had to create a bridge that would span 20cm and hold the most weight for 5 seconds. They only had a small bank of resources, with straws, paper and lolly sticks, so had to use their knowledge of shape and structures to succeed.
The children used many skills: they were creative, reflective, resourceful and very resilient. This term’s value is perseverance and the children displayed this clearly throughout the day!
The testing in the afternoon was very tense. The first bridge held an impressive 5kg, which was later beaten by a bridge holding 6 kg. The final bridge kept the children in suspense right up to the last minute and held a staggering 7kg 800g before collapsing!
Well done to “The Super Sonic Bridge Makers” for winning the Brunel Bridge Challenge!
